Chicago 2016?

With a decision on which city will play host to the 2016 Olympic Games set to come from Copenhagen next Friday, Chicago is hoping that its strong bid will pull through. I'm particularly encouraged by the proposal's attempt to cluster venues around the "heart of the city" (though the venues themselves appear to be underwhelming). Check out the video:

What a fun movie. Shawn Johnson representing for USA.

I agree with your liking the huddling of venues around the "heart" of the city. The whole prospect reminds me of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World's_Columbian_Exposition.

Shouldn't a city have more than one core or heart?

i think i catch your drift, and many hearts in any city is inevitable, but its a good selling point for the bid i suppose.

im not so familiar with chicago myself, having last visited almost a decade ago...can anyone more experienced comment on this?

by the way, i heard obama himself will be endorsing the bid in copenhagen...obama + shawn johnson, an unbeatable combo!

Obama is being a busy pitchman for America hosting international events. He already has written a personal letter to the head of FIFA endorsing a USA World Cup 2018 bid, and now he is pushing Chicago for the 2016 Olympics.

My hunch is that Chicago will get the Olympics and London will get the FIFAWC in 2018.

Madrid apparently has a good bid, but as people have said, that would mean that 3 straight Olympiads were held in Europe, and I can't see it happening.

Rio would be my dark horse candidate to upset Chicago. The Olympics have never, to my knowledge been in South America. While they appear to have a weaker bid, Brazil is scheduled to host the 2014 World Cup, and that would be a good test of the infrastructure and still give the city enough time to squeeze out minor changes.

Yeah usually the "heart" of the city is associated with the most visible part- the downtown with all the skyscrapers, etc. Certainly the actual experience of the city is usually quite different and in the case of New York, for example, very decentralized. Can't comment too much on Chicago since I've only been there for a few days-

It does seem to have a unique infrastructural capacity to handle this event, with some amazing open spaces near the water- I think for that reason alone its bid is probably the strongest- other cities in America just don't have the space to make this kind of "heart of the city" pitch.

Rio is definitely the dark horse, and I could see the committee throwing a bone to S. America, but then again Obama does pull some weight....

I so called it.

We here at Jargon predicted a Rio dark horse for the Olympics. This morning it was announced that this would be the first South American city to host the event.
